THE SECOND LARGEST MILK CONSUMING COUNTRY – INDIA

India is the world’s largest producer of milk, with 24% of global production, followed by the United States of America, Pakistan, China and Brazil. India is aiming to increase its share of global milk production to 30% by 2030.

In 2023-24, India’s total milk production reached an estimated 239.30 million tonnes. This represents a growth of 5.62% over the past 10 years, according to the PIB. Uttar Pradesh is the highest milk-producing state in India. In 2023-24, it produced 38.78 million tonnes of milk, contributing 16.20% of India’s total milk production.

Is their any affect in demand of milk due to increase in price of milk ?

Yes, a survey indicates that rising milk prices in India have led to a decrease in milk consumption, with 20% of respondents reducing their purchases and 3% stopping buying milk entirely. However, another source notes that milk consumption is still growing, with 8-10% volume growth each year.

Cooperative and private dairies, which set milk prices, are reacting to these factors, increasing prices to reflect their increased cost of production and maintain profitability.
