Easy Modak Recipe for Ganesh Chaturthi | Step-by-Step Guide

Ganesh Chaturthi is incomplete without Modaks – Lord Ganesha’s favorite sweet. These soft, sweet dumplings are offered as prasad and enjoyed by everyone at home. While traditional modaks can be a bit tricky to make, here’s a simple and easy recipe you can try this festive season.

Ingredients for Modak

For the filling:

  • 1 cup grated coconut (fresh or desiccated)
  • ¾ cup jaggery (grated or powdered)
  • ½ tsp cardamom powder
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • A few chopped dry fruits (optional)

For the outer cover:

  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • A pinch of salt

Method

Step 1: Prepare the filling

1. Heat ghee in a pan, add grated coconut and sauté for 2 minutes.

2. Add jaggery and cook until it melts and blends well with coconut.

3. Sprinkle cardamom powder and mix.

4. Turn off the flame and let the mixture cool.

Step 2: Prepare the dough

1. In a pan, boil water with a pinch of salt and ghee.

2. Slowly add rice flour and stir continuously to avoid lumps.

3. Cover and let it steam for 2–3 minutes.

4. Transfer to a plate, knead while warm into a soft, smooth dough.

Step 3: Shape the Modaks

1. Grease your palms with ghee.

2. Take a small portion of dough, flatten into a cup shape.

3. Place a spoonful of coconut-jaggery filling inside.

4. Carefully bring the edges together and seal to form a pointed top.

Step 4: Steam the Modaks

1. Place them in a greased steamer plate.

2. Steam for 10–12 minutes until they look glossy.

And your delicious Ukadiche Modak are ready! Serve them hot with ghee on top and offer to Lord Ganesha.

Tips for Beginners

  • If sealing modaks is difficult, you can use a modak mould available in the market.
  • Always keep the dough covered with a damp cloth to prevent drying.
  • For variety, you can also try chocolate or dry fruit modaks.

This Ganesh Chaturthi, make these easy modaks at home and spread sweetness with devotion. Ganpati Bappa Morya!
